Retune at the Annual Meeting of German Society for Neuropediatrics
The 49th Annual Meeting of German Society for Neuropediatrics took place from October 10-12th, 2024 at the “Haus der Wirtschaft” in Stuttgart. The congress focused on clinical topics in neuropediatrics, featuring three sessions dedicated to movement disorders.
Genetics in pediatric movement disorders
On Saturday, Prof. Kühn chaired a session entitled “New concepts and treatments in neurological movement disorders”. The session commenced with Prof. Brüggemann (Lübeck) providing a comprehensive overview on genetics in pediatric movement disorders.
Deep brain stimulation of pediatric dystonia
Prof. Kühn´s talk summarized her research group´s significant contributions to understanding the pathophysiology of dystonia, including work performed in the first funding period of Retune (Lofredi et al., Nature Communications 2024). She also presented several clinical cases of pediatric dystonia treated with deep brain stimulation at the Charité in Berlin, delving into the differential effects of DBS for specific causes of pediatric dystonia.
Challenges in cerebral palsy
Prof. Florian Heinen’s talk emphasized the challenges in clinical routine when treating patients with cerebral palsy. Ana Marcelino presented the group’s literature-based study on lesion distribution and network mapping in dyskinetic cerebral palsy, a collaboration with post-doc Bassam Al-Fatly, recently published as a pre-print (de A. Marcelino, Al-Fatly, … et al., MedrXiv 2024).
The congress highlighted the importance of interdisciplinarity in pediatric movement disorders. By bringing together experts from various fields, the meeting fostered the exchange of knowledge, paving the way for advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of these complex neurological conditions.
