Julian Neumann Presents Adaptive Circuit Targeting at DBS Think Tank
ReTune principal investigator Prof. Julian Neumann was an invited speaker at the 13th Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Think Tank, held from September 2–4, 2025, in Gainesville, Florida. Hosted by the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health, the Think Tank gathered global leaders in neuromodulation under the theme “The Evolving Landscape of DBS: New Indications, New Goals.”
Prof. Neumann spoke in the session titled “Brain Networks and Neuromodulation” on September 2, alongside Dr. Michael Fox and Dr. John Rolston. During the session, he presented a new conceptual framework called adaptive circuit targeting, developed in collaboration with Dr. Rolston.
This approach merges two major developments in DBS research:

Adaptive DBS, which responds to brain signals in real time

Connectomic DBS, which identifies symptom-relevant brain networks to target
By combining both, adaptive circuit targeting seeks to decode symptom severity from real-time brain activity and stimulate only the most relevant brain circuits, tailored to the patient’s condition and the moment.
This unified model could pave the way for more precise, efficient, and personalized DBS therapies—not only in movement disorders like Parkinson’s disease and dystonia, but also in psychiatric and cognitive conditions such as OCD, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression.
Prof. Neumann’s presentation underscores ReTune’s mission to bridge neuroscience, modeling, and clinical translation for the future of individualized neuromodulation.
